Good Careers Content Helps Candidates Decide, Not Just Apply
By Bryan Adams · 26 May 2026
Most careers content is built to do one thing: maximise applications. More clicks, more submissions, more names in the funnel. But application volume is a vanity metric. It tells you how many people pressed a button — not how many were right for the role, or how many will still be there in a year.
The better goal is conviction. Great content doesn't just persuade people to apply; it helps them decide. And deciding well sometimes means deciding not to apply at all.
Honest, specific content attracts the committed — and lets the wrong fit opt out before they cost anyone time.
The candidate conviction gap
There's a gap between the moment someone is interested in a role and the moment they have the informed confidence to commit. I call that the conviction gap. Polished marketing language doesn't close it — specifics do. When you tell people what the work is genuinely like, the right candidates feel more sure, not less.
The conviction checklist
Strong role pages answer six questions before a candidate has to ask them:
- What does the day-to-day work actually look like?
- What does success look like in the first year?
- Who's on the team, and what's the manager like?
- What are the genuine challenges of this role?
- What kind of person thrives here — and who doesn't?
- What happens next in the hiring process?
Answer those honestly and something powerful happens. Application volume may dip. Application quality climbs. Your hires fit better and stay longer. This is storytelling that filters rather than flatters — the core idea behind Sell The Truth.
